The
Story Behind Sounds Good Stereo
Mobile Electronics Specialist Magazine
What makes a successful retail business? If one did
a study, perhaps he would find that it takes hard work and a little
bit of luck.
Isaac Goren,
owner of Sounds Good, is not afraid of hard work. And he would admit
that hes had his share of luck. But his persistence made a
dream for success into reality.
As a recognized
leader in the industry Isaac contributes articles for the following magazines:

In
the Beginning
His story
and the history of Sounds Good begins in February 1978. Isaac and
a friend, Sam Geta, started S&I Stereo. The two shared the cost
of a business license and $2,000 in seed money to purchase a modest
inventory of stereo products. Goren borrowed his dads Volkswagen
van to provide transportation for the inventory and they travelled
to nearby swap meets to sell their wares.
Whether it
was stubbornness or persistence, the two were able to build a fairly
successful business and in 1979 they had enough money to afford
two large trucks with trailers which they converted into swap meet
showrooms. Since there was still a little bit of doubt in their
minds, neither one gave up their day job.
For the next
four years S&I built a regular swap meet clientele, but in 1982
the principals dissolved their partnership and decided to pursue
other methods to sell products. Geta continued with the swap meets
and Goren opened a small warehouse in Canoga Park. He called the
business Sounds Good Stereo & Security.

Building
a Foundation
The
initial plan was to operate the new business as a warehouse outlet.
However, slowly and with persistence Sounds Good was able to build
a reputation as an establishment that offered quality goods and
creative service and instillation.
The
reputation attracted the interest of the Los Angeles media. In
1983 KABC TV wanted to develop a story on installation shops.
They came to Sounds Good. The shop was featured on the six oclock
news as the most unique car stereo and security installation shop
in Los Angeles and business boomed. The free publicity had such
an effect; Goren had to move Sounds Good from the small warehouse
to a storefront on a major street in Canoga Park.
The
television coverage was a lucky break, but Goren didnt rely
on it. He decided to pursue innovative ways to expand his market.
He developed a plan to reach out to corporations. His scheme was
to supply security systems to the vehicle fleet of a large medical
company. Before Gorens pitch, the company suffered a $46,000
loss to their fleet due to theft and vandalism.
After
Sounds Good developed a program that cost $18,000, the companys
losses totaled a measly $1,200 the first year.
And
there were more innovations. As early as 1985, Goren recognized
that the auto manufactures were affecting the car audio after-market
business because they were including sophisticated audio equipment
in their vehicles from the factory. He realized that the after-market
could provide better systems to consumers than the carmakers could,
so Goren devised a way to show that difference. He produced Sound-Off
competitions. The first Auto Sound Challenge was held in 1986
and it drew 171 contestants and more than 5,000 spectators. As
a result of the Sound Challenge, Goren created the SoundQuake
series competitions and founded Expo Trends Productions to put
them on. Through the years his events were sanctioned by the National
Auto Sound Challenge Association (NACA) and the International
Auto Sound Challenge Association (IASCA). He served as a vice
president of IASCA and helped draft that groups rules. In
the mid '90's, Goren helped to form a new competition association
The Competitive Mobile Audio Association (CMAA). He assisted
in the drafting of its rules and bylaws and served as a regional
vice president. Now SoundQuake is hosting SPL Contests in Woodland
Hills, Ca.
Other
inventive marketing ideas followed. Due to the success of the
Sound-Off phenomenon throughout the nation and around the world
and the advent of more and more trade and consumer shows specifically
for the car audio and security, Goren recognized the advantage
of creating unique demonstration vehicles which showcase a particular
manufacturers line of products. So he approached some of
the top manufacturers in the field of car audio and security,
convinced them of the merits of his idea and was assigned to build
many of the most unique show vehicles making rounds today. He

From
humble beginnings in 1978, Isaac Goren has guided Sounds Good
Stereo and Security into one of the most successful mobile electronics
shops around. Things have been so good, in fact, the store moved
to a 6,000 square foot facility in 1993. The shop is described
in detail in the first issue of Good News From Sounds Good.
And
Sounds Good has been rewarded for its efforts. It has been recognized
as the Top Installer of the year by Mobile Electronics Specialist
magazine in 1990 and 91. And it is one of the top 12 Installers
of the Year for 1994. Mobile Electronics Specialist is a trade
publication that covers the mobile electronics industry. Sounds
